English version

30 years after the peaceful revolution in the GDR, the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur (Federal Foundation for the Reconciliation of the SED Dictatorship) takes a critical stock of the situation and warns against glossing things over in the SED state. "Dictatorship remains dictatorship - and it must be called that," said Anna Kaminsky, managing director of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung. At the same time, Kaminsky made it clear that she still does not consider the task of her foundation to have been fulfilled.

Now 30 years ago, at the beginning of September 1989, the Monday demonstrations began in Leipzig, which made a major contribution to the peaceful revolution and German reunification. Kaminsky stressed that the communist dictatorship in the GDR had existed for 40 years; together with the Soviet occupation it was about 45 years. "There were 250,000 political prisoners in the GDR over all these years. Many of them are still alive. In addition, there were the victims of extrajudicial persecutions. And even if you now see that the GDR itself will still be played down in 2019, then I say: "No, the reappraisal is not over, and it should not be over in 20 or 30 years".

Deadlines for SED victims have been lifted

The scientist welcomed the fact that the Federal Government wants to abolish the deadlines for SED victims so that they can still submit applications for rehabilitation after 31 December 2019: "The fact that the deadlines will be abolished is a good step. But the draft still falls short. We also demand compensatory payments for victims of decomposition measures, for victims of forced resettlement, for persecuted pupils, improvements for former children in institutions and for prison victims with a term of imprisonment of less than 180 days.

Comparing differences between democracy and dictatorship

Kaminsky also demanded more pressure with a view to schools: The topic of communist dictatorship was indeed on the curriculum. But that doesn't mean it's taught. She therefore demanded: "German post-war history with division and communist dictatorship must be part of the regular final examinations, both after the tenth grade and after the twelfth or thirteenth grade. One can also impressively illustrate the differences between democracy and dictatorship".

The life work of people must be appreciated

According to Kaminsky, another aspect must be separated from the subject of dictatorship: "The fact that one has spent one's life under a dictatorship does not mean that one is a bad person or that one has had a bad life. You have to make it clear that there is a difference between the political system and your own life." To the address of former GDR citizens she said that one could be quite proud of "what one has made of life under the conditions of dictatorship, what has been achieved for the family, the children". To this day, she does not really understand why so many people from the GDR apparently defined themselves through the political system. "Life's achievements must be appreciated, but that can't mean talking the dictatorship up." pm, ots
