English version

The federal government sees significant risks to the stability of the financial system through the plans of the U.S. company Facebook to introduce the new virtual currency "Libra". According to the Ministry of Finance's response to a small question from the Green parliamentary group, which has been submitted to the Düsseldorf "Rheinische Post", the effects on banks, the stability of payment transactions and emerging markets are to be expected.

In addition, "Libra" could trigger a dangerous "bank run", i.e. mass withdrawals of real money, writes the Ministry of Finance. "It is therefore conceivable - analogous to what happened with money market funds in the financial crisis - that massive and abrupt 'returns' from Libra would cause the Reserve Fund of the Libra Association to withdraw large amounts of deposits from commercial banks or sell the government bonds held as cover," the answer says. "EU member states should think as quickly as possible about how to meet the obvious need for digital currencies," said Green politician Danyal Bayaz. Virtual currencies should be subject to the same rules as traditional currencies.
