English version

The possible ban on artificial turf pitches is creating uncertainty in many sports clubs and municipalities. Lower Saxony's Sports Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has now come out in favour of a ban on the use of artificial turf in venues if it is actually imposed.

Pistorius informed the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" that microplastics have been proven to be harmful to the environment. "But we must also bear in mind that plastic turf pitches are of enormous importance for sports and football in particular.

The controversial playing fields will be the subject of both the Sports and Environment Ministerial Conferences this week.

There are said to be about 6000 such sports fields nationwide. In the course of its plastics strategy, the EU Commission wants to examine whether the courts filled with microplastic granulate should be banned. Consultations are expected to start in mid-2020 and a ban should not be introduced before 2021. In this case, gaming operations must continue to be secured, Pistorius demanded. Artificial turf pitches are "indispensable especially in large cities and conurbations" for training and play operations.

SPD Minister Pistorius wants to support protection of existing pitches

The SPD politician wants to prevent the squares from having to be shut down and demolished immediately in the event of a ban. He therefore wants to advocate protection of the stock and an appropriate transition period. "That helps the associations and municipalities locally , so Pistorius. Lower Saxony has tabled a motion to this effect at the Sports Ministers' Conference in Bremerhaven, which will take place on Thursday. pm, ots, mei
