English version

Tomorrow, Tuesday, CES 2020 (7 to 10 January) starts in Las Vegas. The organizer reports more than 4500 exhibitors, including 10 car manufacturers. According to our author Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, the CES seems to be less able to take advantage of the great opportunity to establish itself more strongly as a meeting point for the automotive scene: "A few years ago, the CES hype was much greater, even though the Detroit Motor Show no longer opens in January and thus the CES would have had a kind of monopoly position.

The hype about autonomous moving cars, i.e. Level 5 Robocars, has subsided. The self-driving car will not be available from the classic car manufacturers in the next few years, and Tesla also made it clear that the "autopilot" is not an autopilot after all. Car manufacturers are concentrating more on semi-autonomous driving of commercial vehicles.

All down-to-earth further developments

This leaves the innovations on show, such as the integration of the Amazon Alexa into a GM, a sun visor from Bosch that "readjusts" automatically, a new use of smartphones at Honda and a glass ball on four wheels, Renault demos on how to control devices in the house from the car via the Internet, BMW's new interior concept for the i3, the plug-in hybrid from Jeep. All rather down-to-earth developments or less tangible studies.

Tesla is not represented at the CES

According to our information, Tesla is not on the CES. A US tech show without Tesla is not very exciting for the automotive scene. Elon Musk has preferred to present his cyber truck at the end of November without CES.  The big topic electric car with new models is less a topic of CES. Exactly what is currently moving the automotive market and the world is less represented.

A conclusion

CES has lost some of its appeal for the automotive scene. There is a lot to be said for the fact that this year's major auto show will be held in China again in April. The news that Tesla produced its first Model 3 in China a few days ago went around the world. The plug-in hybrids from Jeep and the other automotive innovations from CES should meet with manageable interest. At the Beijing Auto Show starting April 21 (first press day), Tesla will also be present again as an exhibitor. And besides Tesla the whole car world. China defines the car world ... you can feel that at CES.
