Aldi steht unverändert an achter Position.

Top 250 - stabil trotz niedrigeren Wachstums

English version

Customs and trade conflicts, brexite and a fragile global economy - the retail trade is now facing numerous challenges. And yet: The results of the Deloitte Global Powers of Retailing Report 2020 show stable growth. Last year, the top 250 global retailers generated a total of 4.74 trillion US dollars in sales, which means an average of around 19 billion US dollars per company.

This is 2.8 percent more than in the 2019 report, but the retail sector's sales growth, adjusted for exchange rate fluctuations, was 4.1 percent, which is lower than in the previous year (5.7 percent).

The largest retailers worldwide

The ranking of the top 250 is still led by the US suppliers Wal-Mart and Costco. The Schwarz Group, the highest ranking German retailer, was able to improve its ranking by one place to fourth. Aldi remains in eighth position. Thus, the Schwarz Group, just like Amazon, overtook the fourth-placed Kroger from the previous year, who slipped by two places. Schwarz grew by 7.6 percent in fiscal year 2018 and - like Aldi with 3.2 percent growth - opened up important new markets. Amazon, however, once again achieved the strongest growth in earnings with 18.2 percent. The sales growth of the top ten in total was 6.3 percent.

Amazon with above-average sales growth

"As in the previous year, Amazon showed above-average sales growth. Walgreens and the British company Tesco also achieved double-digit growth, while the German companies here are in the upper and lower midfield respectively. A look at the top 250 shows a striking stability, even if the average growth of 4.1 percent was lower than last year," explains Karsten Hollasch, Partner and Head of Consumer Business at Deloitte.

Top Ten - Schwarz and Aldi focus on new markets

Consistent modernisation of the branches

The Schwarz Group's success is the result of several factors: these include the consistent modernization of Lidl & Co. branches, but also the combination of targeted expansion of its presence in existing markets as well as the development of new ones such as Serbia, Estonia and Latvia - and last but not least the acquisition of 27 Best Market branches in the USA. Above all, Aldi has pushed ahead with the expansion of its product range to include additional brands and has also opened numerous new stores. An important step was the move to China, where several Aldi supermarkets and flagship stores now exist in the major cities.

Top 250 - stable despite lower growth

The top 250 of the world's largest retailers include - besides Schwarz and Aldi - a total of 17 other German suppliers: Edeka (16), Rewe Combine (20), Metro (34), Ceconomy (38), Otto (85), Rossmann (95), dm (98), Tengelmann (119), Adidas (136), Globus (139), Bauhaus (161), Zalando (166), Deichmann (176), Hornbach (214), Müller (222), McKesson (232) and Norma (240). Compared with the previous year, there has also been remarkable stability - in terms of annual earnings growth, net profit margin and internationalization. However, the currency-adjusted growth rate was slightly lower than before and more companies reported declining sales. Of the 187 companies that published their results, 162 were profitable - even more in 2017 (86.6% in 2018 vs. 91.8% in 2017). Margins rose by 0.7 percentage points to 3% from 2017 to 2018.

Fastest 50 - Profit through customer loyalty

Traditionally, the report also identifies the 50 fastest growing retail companies. With Zalando (8) and Adidas (40), two German players are also included. A total of 36 of the Fastest-50 retailers who publish their results were profitable in the 2018 financial year - with a net profit margin of 2.9 percent, which is hardly different from that of the top 250.

E-Commerce and loyal customers are the growth drivers

"Central growth drivers - as the Fastest 50 in particular show - are e-commerce in particular and the ability to build a solid and loyal customer base. It shows that it is precisely the customer experience, which goes far beyond choice and price, that can be decisive. A congruent multi-channel strategy and the use of digital instruments to build a holistic brand world including innovative services not only ensure growth in individual companies but also influence the entire industry," adds Hollasch. pm, ots, mei
