Funkel war Ende Januar als Fortuna-Trainer freigestellt worden. Pfannenstiel und Fortuna hatten sich am Dienstag auf eine vorzeitige Vertragsauflösung zum 31. Mai 2020 geeinigt. Sein Nachfolger als Sportvorstand wird Uwe Klein, der als Leiter der Scoutingabteilung zusammen mit Funkel erfolgreich die Zweitliga-Kader bis zum Aufstieg in die Bundesliga 2018 und dem darauffolgenden Klassenerhalt 2019 geplant hatte. Funkel sieht nicht nur Pfannenstiel als Schuldigen für seine Demission. "Da saßen ja noch andere Leute dabei", betonte er.
