English version

Sabine Zimmermann, labour market policy spokeswoman of the Left parliamentary group in the Bundestag, considers the existence of the 2.2 million self-employed who do not employ any staff to be acutely threatened by the Corona crisis.

Zimmermann warns in an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ): "The current crisis is particularly threatening the existence of very many of the solo self-employed, as they often have no financial cushion and are not entitled to short-time work benefits. Zimmermann demands: "The Federal Government must also offer special support services here and must not only focus on larger companies."

The left-wing politician points out that many of these self-employed earn very little. "In many cases their income is below average and hardly sufficient to secure their livelihood", Zimmermann said. The number of self-employed without employees has risen since 2000 from 1.8 million to 2.2 million in 2018. Many of them work in the creative industries such as musicians, music teachers, artists, photographers and journalists.

Expanding the basic provision for self-employed persons without red tape

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced on Sunday that he would expand the basic provision for the self-employed in the crisis in an unbureaucratic manner. In addition, according to Scholz, a fund could be set up with the help of the development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), which would help companies when they are unable to cope with permanent burdens such as rents and other business expenses in the short term due to a lack of income. A spokesman for the Ministry of Finance told the NOZ that a proposal is currently being worked on. pm, ots, mei
