The Bayer Group will donate eight million chloroquine tablets to the German government this week. Further donations of tablets will go to China, Italy and the U.S.A., according to the Düsseldorf-based "Rheinische Post" newspaper. The drug was developed by Bayer in the 1930s and is used against malaria. It is now considered a beacon of hope in the fight against the lung disease Covid-19.

The eight million tablets were supplied by Bayer's Chinese partners and arrived at Bayer's pharmaceutical logistics center in Leverkusen on Easter Sunday, Bayer said. A further four million tablets manufactured by Bayer under the trade name Resochin have been shipped to countries such as China, Italy and the United States, which are particularly affected by the pandemic. pm, ots, mei
