English version

The decision of US President Donald Trump to cut funding during the WHO Corona pandemic shows "the dangers of a policy that relies on individual interests rather than global action", according to the aid organisation Medico International, "The combination of nationalist action and the systematic weakening of multilateral approaches has health-threatening, even fatal, consequences", says Dr Andreas Wulf, health officer at medico international.

"The only reasonable consequence of current events can only be a massive strengthening of the WHO and its independence. The corona pandemic, he said, had made visible the need for independent control of global health policy. "We are witnessing it now: a pandemic can only be contained through joint action. The virus does not stop at borders. The community of states must now massively strengthen the WHO financially so that it can assume a strong leadership role in global health care and implement a human rights-oriented approach to care.

WHO had to beg for information

According to Wulf, the problem began even before Trump's attack: "The WHO had to beg to get the necessary information during the crisis. This blocked rapid action, which has serious consequences especially in acute decision-making processes." The WHO must be strengthened in its independence. It needed the scope for action to produce its analyses and recommendations independently of the interest-driven influence of its increasingly private donors. "We need a global health organization that is capable of acting independently of economic interests and political particular interests. This will also apply to the issue of corona vaccines and drugs, the distribution of which should be organised by the WHO," said Wulf. pm, ots, mei
