English version

Ifo President Clemens Fuest has welcomed the German-French aid initiative of 500 billion euros. "It is very good that Germany and France are jointly presenting a proposal for the EU's response to the corona crisis. The launch of a European fund to promote economic recovery is an important signal for European capacity to act and solidarity," he said in Munich.

"It is important that the expenditure of this fund offers added value compared with programmes in the individual Member States," Fuest continued. "This added value can consist in the insurance and stabilisation effect. The whole of Europe has an interest in supporting the countries most affected by the crisis. There is also a considerable need for investment in cross-border infrastructure such as transport and communication networks".

Debt financing of the fund one-off

Fuest added: "It is important that the debt financing of the fund is unique and is accompanied by a repayment schedule. Repayment should begin after economic recovery is achieved. After the necessary expansion of public debt in the Corona crisis, there must be a credible perspective for reducing debt ratios in Europe". pm, ifo, mei
