English version

Leading experts have called for an urgent fresh start and more money for the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure that the fight against corona is also successful in poorer countries. The situation in the southern hemisphere is "dramatic", many countries there simply lack the funds for health care and vaccination of large parts of the population, said World Medical Officer Frank Ulrich Montgomery in an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ).

"This is where the World Health Organization must urgently step in." To this end, the member states of the WHO "must make more money available right now. Because if the fight against Corona is lost in southern Africa, it will be lost for the whole globe. We cannot lock the virus up on one continent, it will keep finding its way to us."

WHO is bled dry in terms of personnel and funding

The WHO has been "bled dry financially and in terms of personnel", SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach complained in the newspaper "NOZ". The organization now has a decisive role to play in fighting corona in developing countries and preventing future pandemics. "We must not wait until (US President Donald) Trump and (China's President) Xi (Jinping) stop fighting and the US gets back in. The other countries must immediately increase their contributions," said Lauterbach. There has never been a time when strengthening the organisation has been more important. The SPD politician and epidemiologist warned that the "health nato" for the EU proclaimed by Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) should not obscure the view of the challenges outside Europe.

Everyone can exert pressure with money

Top representatives of medical research say: "Whether states like the USA and China or people like Bill Gates: everyone can exert pressure with money. We have to stop that. In addition, there are numerous duplicate responsibilities, for example with sub-organisations of the United Nations such as UNAids and UNFPA, complains an expert on the international health system. Perhaps it would make more sense to have a WHO profile that relied on the networking of existing disease control centres in different regions of the world. Montgomery also urged "to free the WHO from political influence, to develop it into a World Health Organization and to strengthen its scientific competence". The new start must make the WHO a "powerful, but purely scientific-medical actor".

Federal Government is only a spectator

The chairman of the board of the World Medical Association accused the German government of being "only spectators, that is not enough" beyond its contributions to the WHO. Also from a medical-historical perspective, the importance of the organization could not be overestimated. "The WHO has achieved enormous successes, the eradication of smallpox, the near-eradication of polio, the containment of malaria. None of this would have been possible without it, and it must not be questioned now," he said. pm, ots, mei
