Gemeinsam mit seinem Amtskollegen Luigi di Maio wird der deutsche Minister ein Institut zur Prävention, Diagnose und Behandlung von Infektionskrankheiten besuchen. Wenige Tage vor Beginn der deutschen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft will Maas seinem italienischen Kollegen die Schwerpunkte des deutschen Programms vorstellen.

"Kein Land wird allein den Aufschwung schaffen, wenn der Nachbar in der Krise stecken bleibt, die Nachfrage wegbricht, Lieferketten abreißen", sagte Maas. Darin liege aber auch eine Chance: "Wenn es uns gelingt, alte Gräben zu überwinden, wenn wir auf den Zusammenhalt und die Solidarität der letzten Wochen aufbauen, dann kann und wird Europa gestärkt aus der Krise hervorgehen", sagte Maas. Diese Aufgabe werde die deutsche EU-Ratspräsidentschaft prägen, und dafür brauche man die Mitwirkung aller Mitgliedsstaaten. pm, ots

"The corona pandemic hit Italy earlier and harder than others, but the consequences of the crisis are felt by all of us in Europe equally," Maas told the Düsseldorf-based newspaper "Rheinische Post".
"The economic and social revival demands an effort from all of us, the like of which the European Union has never experienced before," Maas said. "No country will be able to achieve recovery on its own if its neighbour gets stuck in a crisis, demand falls away, supply chains break down", said Maas. But there is also an opportunity in this: "If we succeed in overcoming old rifts, if we build on the cohesion and solidarity of recent weeks, then Europe can and will emerge from the crisis stronger," said Maas.
