Der Innenpolitiker rief dazu auf, "den Respekt gegenüber öffentlichen Institutionen und besonders gegenüber der Polizei wiederherzustellen".
Das Ausmaß der Gewalt gegen Polizeibeamte in Deutschland bezeichnete er in der NOZ als "erschütternd". Drei bis vier Polizisten würden täglich Opfer einer gefährlichen und schweren Körperverletzung. "Für Gewalt gegen Polizeibeamte gibt es in unserem Rechtsstaat keine Rechtfertigung. Polizisten handeln stellvertretend für unserer Gemeinschaft", betonte Middelberg. Following the violence against police officers in Stuttgart, Mathias Middelberg (CDU), the interior policy spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has warned against drawing "inappropriate parallels" between police violence in Germany and the U.S.
"With trust comes loss of inhibition, and some believe they are allowed to 'strike back' even against the police officers. The ideological propaganda against our police must come to an end," Middelberg told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ). The politician for domestic affairs called for "restoring respect for public institutions and especially for the police".
In the NOZ he described the extent of violence against police officers in Germany as "shocking". Three to four police officers would become victims of dangerous and serious bodily harm every day.
