English version

In order to combat the economic consequences of the pandemic at home or to finance the relevant government measures, Italian private investors can subscribe to the issue of the BTP Futura between 6 and 10 July, starting from a minimum of EUR 1,000, i.e. a retail investor-friendly denomination. Understandably, there is no upper limit for subscription to the bond. The Italian Ministry of Finance has not yet provided any information on the volume of the bond; presumably they will not want to set an upper limit in view of the capital requirements.

The new paper is based on Italy's patriotic bond, the so-called BTP Italia, but has some new features. The paper with a ten-year term (maturity 14 July 2030) attracts investors with a so-called loyalty bonus. The fixed yield of the bond - the guaranteed minimum yield is to be announced on July 3 - is to rise after certain points in time (step-up), namely after the fourth and seventh year; anyone who holds the bond until maturity will then receive a premium. All of this is intended to motivate investors to stay with the stock, i.e. to buy and hold it. A minimum 1% premium is to be paid, a maximum of 3%, and the whole thing is made dependent on the economic development of the country, i.e. on the growth of the gross domestic product.

Bond is in the clearly positive yield range

What kind of response will the product probably meet with? If the bond were offered to institutional investors, the current state of the market and investors' appetite for bonds from the eurozone periphery would almost certainly lead to a record order book. The premiums alone would ensure this, as the bond is clearly in the positive yield range. Presumably a good reception can also be assumed among private investors. If it becomes a bankruptcy because the buyers go on strike, that is certainly an alarm signal, not only for Italy.

New bond documents the sensibility

Italy's BTP Futura bond shows the ingenuity when it comes to mobilising capital. And the BTP Futura is certainly not the last innovation to come onto the market in terms of bonds in connection with Covid-19. It will be interesting to see what new forms of fixed income will reach the bond market and, above all, who the issuer will be, that is, who will follow in Italy's footsteps.
