Demnach sei der ehemalige Bundeswirtschaftsminister seit März 2020 bis mindestens Ende Mai 2020 für den Konzern tätig gewesen. Gabriel erhielt bislang offenbar ein Pauschalhonorar von 10.000 Euro im Monat sowie ein zusätzliches vierstelliges Honorar für jeden Reisetag. Die Tätigkeit sollte auf zwei Jahre angelegt sein.
Auf Anfrage von "Panorama" habe Sigmar Gabriel mitgeteilt, dass seine privatwirtschaftlichen Tätigkeiten keiner Veröffentlichungspflicht unterlägen. Er habe bei Auskünften an Medien immer auch Interessen Dritter zu wahren. Trotzdem habe er bestätigt, dass er ab dem 1. März 2020 für Tönnies tätig gewesen sei. Er habe das Unternehmen im Rahmen von drohenden Exportproblemen im Zusammenhang mit der Afrikanischen Schweinepest beraten. Seine Arbeit sei aber mittlerweile beendet: "Diese Tätigkeit musste ich aufgrund einer schwierigen Erkrankung und einer dadurch für mich notwendig gewordenen komplizierten Operation zum 31. Mai 2020 beenden. Für mich war zum damaligen Zeitpunkt nicht klar, ob und ggf. wann ich meine beruflichen Tätigkeiten wieder aufnehmen kann."
Besonderes öffentliches Interesse
Gabriel sagte, dass er die "Panorama"-Anfrage beantworte werde "aufgrund des besonderen öffentlichen Interesses im vorliegenden Fall und auch aufgrund der Tatsache, dass weder ich noch meine Geschäftspartner die frühere Beratungstätigkeit für die Firma Tönnies als problematisch ansehen".
Tönnies habe sich persönlich um die Personalien gekümmert

Corona-Infektionen im Tönnies-Fleisckkonzern
Der Fleischkonzern Tönnies steht nach einer Welle von Corona-Infektionen unter überwiegend osteuropäischen Werkvertragsarbeitnehmern am Standort Rheda-Wiedenbrück im Kreis Gütersloh in der Kritik. Anfang 2015 habe Sigmar Gabriel - noch als Bundeswirtschaftsminister - das System der Ausbeutung in der deutschen Fleischindustrie als "Schande für Deutschland" bezeichnet. In der Folge hätten sich die sechs größten deutschen Fleischkonzerne unter Federführung von Gabriel und Tönnies auf eine freiwillige Selbstverpflichtung zur Einhaltung sozialer Standards in der Fleischwirtschaft.
In Unterkünfte sollte investiert werden
Demnach sollten künftig auch alle Werkvertragsarbeitnehmer nach deutschem Arbeits- und Sozialversicherungsrecht beschäftigt sein, die Zahl der Werkverträge sollte reduziert werden. Zudem sei vereinbart worden, dass in die Unterkünfte investiert werde. Die Initiative sei nach Ansicht von Panorama weitgehend wirkungslos gewesen. Allein beim Tönnies-Konzern sei 2018 nach eigenen Angaben die Hälfte aller Beschäftigten noch über Subunternehmen tätig gewesen.
