Auch mit den Beschlüssen der vergangenen Woche, den deutschen Mindestlohn bis Mitte 2022 auf 10,45 Euro zu erhöhen, liege dieser "weiter unter der offiziell anerkannten Armutsrisikoschwelle".
Aus der vergangenen Finanzkrise wisse man, dass sich Armut trotz Arbeit ausgeweitet habe, so Demirel weiter. "Ein EU-Mindestlohn-Rahmen wäre damit ein erster wichtiger Schritt, um dem entgegenzuwirken", betonte die Abgeordnete. Özlem Alev Demirel, MEP of the Left Party, has called for a rapid increase in the minimum wage in Germany to at least twelve euros per hour. "Anything else means a wage of poverty", said the MEP, who is also active in the Social Affairs Committee of the EU Parliament, in an article for the national daily newspaper "neues deutschland".
Even with last week's decisions to increase the German minimum wage to 10.45 euros by mid 2022, she said that it was "still below the officially recognised poverty risk threshold".
