Gyde Jensen, chairwoman of the Human Rights Committee of the German Bundestag, has accused the international community of not having learned any lessons from the massacre of Srebrenica 25 years ago for subsequent wars and conflicts.

"When you look at what is happening right on our European doorstep in Syria, we have to say quite clearly that the world community has apparently not learned so much," the FDP politician told the Düsseldorf newspaper "Rheinische Post".

The recent failed negotiations in the UN Security Council on aid measures for the civil war country were proof of this, she said. She added that the most terrible crimes such as genocide could only be prevented if multilateral institutions were strengthened. But each individual could also take responsibility, Jensen said. "Whenever human rights become a bargaining chip, this world becomes a little more brutalized. Every individual therefore has the responsibility to take a stand in everyday life when people are deprived of their dignity. pm, ots, mei
