"Schalke liegt mir natürlich unglaublich am Herzen. Und das bleibt auch so", sagte der 64-Jährige im Interview mit dem in Bielefeld erscheinenden Westfalen-Blatt.
"Ich werde Schalke nicht den Rücken kehren, werde weiter zu Spielen gehen. Ich kann doch nicht einfach die schönsten 26 Jahre meines Lebens, die ich dort hatte, abhaken", erklärte Tönnies. Mit Blick auf die neue Saison stellte er fest: "Wir brauchen jetzt sportlichen Erfolg."
Kein Rücktritt wegen Landesbürgschaft
Spekulationen, das Land NRW habe vor dem Hintergrund des massiven Corona-Ausbruchs in seinem Fleischkonzern seinen Rücktritt bei Schalke zur Bedingung für eine Landesbürgschaft für den Verein gemacht, wies Tönnies zurück: "Das ist eine Geschichte, die ich noch nicht gehört habe." Die von seinem Konzern dem Fußballclub zur Verfügung gestellte Kreditlinie über 25 Millionen Euro sei "lange ausgelaufen. Jegliches Engagement wäre immer von privater Seite", erklärte Tönnies.
Auch in Bielefeld weiter zum Fußball gehen
Er äußerte sich zudem über die von Bundesliga-Aufsteiger Arminia Bielefeld im Zuge des Corona-Ausbruchs beendete Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Fleischkonzern. "Es passt leider hinein in eine völlig überhitzte Stimmung, geprägt von Hetze und Unsachlichkeit. Ich habe ein sehr ehrliches Entschuldigungs-schreiben von Arminia Bielefeld bekommen", sagte Tönnies und fügte an: "Natürlich hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass das, was dort bedauert wird, vorher gegriffen hätte. Dann wäre das so nie passiert. Aber auch hier werde ich weiter zum Fußball gehen."
Arminia Bielefeld beendete Partnerschaft mit Tönnies
Der Zweitliga-Meister hatte Ende Juni mitgeteilt, "aufgrund der aktuellen Ereignisse die werbliche Partnerschaft mit dem Unternehmen Tönnies nicht fortsetzen" zu werden. Der Vertrag lief am 30. Juni aus. 2013 war eine Kooperation, die unter anderem die Nutzung der mit Kunstrasen ausgestatteten Tönnies-Arena direkt am Konzernsitz in Rheda-Wiedenbrück umfasste, verkündet worden. Seit Juli 2019 war Tönnies auch offiziell als Sponsoring-Partner des DSC Arminia Bielefeld geführt worden. pm, ots
