English version

Laura Dekker (24), Dutch-New Zealand sailor, who completed a solo circumnavigation of the world in 2012 as the youngest person ever, looks at the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg (17) with goodwill and respect, but is not sparing in her criticism: "First and foremost, I like what she stands for. And I like the fact that as a young girl she had a clear goal and a clear opinion, which she also expressed well. I think that's great," Dekker told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ).

But she also knows "what it's like to be in the center of the media and that everyone can twist it so that something else comes out in the end," Dekker added. "She started out very small, and it really came from her heart. But then it took a turn - a lot of other people want to use her for their own purposes, and that would probably be very, very difficult even for a 30-year-old.

Better to offer a solution than to denounce

Thunberg would be well advised to take a somewhat more positive view of things: "It would perhaps be nice if Greta didn't see everything so negatively, but said something positive for once. Sometimes it's better to offer a solution than to always just denounce". The 24-year-old, who is now the mother of an almost two-year-old son, has separated from the child's father, a German boat builder, as she confirmed in the interview: "We've been apart again for quite a while now.

It is important to take responsibility

Dekker, who lives in New Zealand, described as "totally difficult" the question of under what conditions she would allow her son to go on a solo circumnavigation of the world in a sailboat as a 14-year-old: "I want to pass on to my son exactly what my father did for me. I want to trust him so that he can learn on his own and do things he wants to do. This is difficult, because for this you have to let him go and watch him make mistakes. It is important for me that he takes responsibility, that he can look ahead and can assess the consequences. That he thinks before he does something."

Sailing to the Caribbean with young people

Dekker wants to stick to her plans to sail across the Atlantic into the Caribbean with a group of young people this year, even though the plan to build a new ship for this purpose has been smashed: "Actually we wanted to start building the ship this year, but because of Corona, this didn't work out because the sponsors and the shipyard didn't know how to proceed at first. But now we have found a used ship that I had looked at a few years ago and which was far too expensive at the time. Now we have bought it for the foundation and want to take the first sailing trips this year. Actually we could start in November, but because of Corona we don't know who can join us at all. We have many children from America, but because of Corona they have nowhere to go. That's why we are now looking more to Europe.
