Das Preisgeld in Höhe von 25.000 Euro wird von Katarina Witt, Stiftungsrat-Mitglied der Deutschen Sporthilfe und selbst Preisträgerin der "Goldenen Sportpyramide" im Jahr 2010, bereitgestellt und geht traditionell an Projekte im Sport, die vom Preisträger zu benennen sind.
Hans Wilhelm Gäb gilt als eine der profiliertesten und angesehensten Personen des deutschen Sports. Seit der mehrfache Deutsche Meister und Nationalspieler im Tischtennis 1981 das Präsidentenamt im Deutschen Tischtennis-Bund (DTTB) übernahm, engagierte er sich ehrenamtlich im Sport. Von 1988 bis 1992 hatte Gäb im Präsidium des Nationalen Olympischen Komitees (NOK) und von 1990 bis 1991 als stellvertretender Vorsitzender im Vorstand der Deutschen Sporthilfe mitgewirkt.
Gesundheitliche Probleme verhinderten Aufstieg
Gesundheitliche Probleme verhinderten damals das ihm zugedachte stärkere Engagement in der Nachfolge von NOK-Präsident Willi Daume. Auf die 1992 für die Olympischen Spielen in Barcelona ihm anvertraute Aufgabe als Chef de Mission der ersten gesamtdeutschen Mannschaft nach der Wiedervereinigung musste er verzichten, weil ein Virus seine Leber zu zerstören begann. Später gab er auch seine Ämter als Präsident der Europäischen Tischtennis-Union (ETTU) und des DTTB auf, den er 13 Jahre lang geführt hatte.
"Sportler für Organspenden"
1994 musste sich Gäb einer Lebertransplantation unterziehen. Seine persönliche Erfahrung bewog ihn dazu, Menschen in ähnlicher Situation mit den von ihm gegründeten Vereinen "Sportler für Organspende" (1998) und "Kinderhilfe Organtransplantation" (2004) zu unterstützen.
Im Vorstand von Opel
Der gelernte Journalist gründete zu Beginn seiner beruflichen Karriere das Fachmagazin "Auto-Zeitung" (1968) und war bei Ford (1973-1981) der erste Kommunikations-Chef im Vorstandsrang. 1982 wechselte er zur Adam Opel AG, zunächst in den Vorstand, zuletzt als Vice-President von General Motors Europe und Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender der Adam Opel AG. Nach dem beruflichen Ausstieg bei Opel (1998) engagierte er sich wieder verstärkt im Sport und kehrte in den Sporthilfe-Vorstand zurück, von 2005 bis 2007 als Vorstandsvorsitzender. Unter dem Motto "Leistung. Fairplay. Miteinander." entwickelte er den noch heute gültigen strategischen Markenkern der Stiftung. 2008 wechselte er als Vorsitzender in den Aufsichtsrat, dem er bis heute als Ehrenvorsitzender angehört.
Hans Wilhelm Gäb ist seit 58 Jahren mit Frau Hella verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder, Wolfgang und Christiane.
Mitglied der Hall of Fame
Die Wahl des Preisträgers der "Goldenen Sportpyramide" erfolgt durch die bisherigen Preisträger sowie den Sporthilfe-Stiftungsrat als unabhängige Jury. Seit dem Jahr 2000 wird die "Goldene Sportpyramide" verliehen. Unter den Preisträgern sind u.a. Steffi Graf, Franz Beckenbauer, Heiner Brand, Henry Maske, Rosi Mittermaier-Neureuther, Uwe Seeler und Max Schmeling sowie Vorjahres-Preisträgerin Franziska van Almsick. Hans Wilhelm Gäb wird gleichzeitig Mitglied der "Hall of Fame des deutschen Sports", die damit zukünftig aus 121 Mitgliedern besteht. In diesem Jahr wurden außerdem Verena Bentele (Para-Biathlon und -Skilanglauf), Georg Hackl (Rennrodeln) und Thomas Lange (Rudern) von der Jury in die "Hall of Fame" gewählt.
Forum für die Erinnerung an Menschen
Die im Jahr 2006 von der Deutschen Sporthilfe initiierte "Hall of Fame des deutschen Sports" ist ein Forum der Erinnerung an Menschen, die durch ihren Erfolg im Wettkampf oder durch ihren Einsatz für Sport und Gesellschaft Geschichte geschrieben haben. Die "Hall of Fame" wird von adidas begleitet und existiert "virtuell" im Internet. Träger und vorschlagsberechtigt sind neben der Deutschen Sporthilfe der Deutsche Olympische Sportbund und der Verband Deutscher Sportjournalisten. pm, ots

This year the "Golden Sports Pyramid" goes to Hans Wilhelm Gäb. The former national table tennis player, business leader and functionary has left his mark on German and international sport for almost half a century as a face for fair and clean sports.
The prize money of 25,000 euros is provided by Katarina Witt, a member of the Board of Trustees of Deutsche Sporthilfe and herself a winner of the "Golden Sports Pyramid" award in 2010, and traditionally goes to projects in sport to be named by the award winner.
Hans Wilhelm Gäb is considered one of the most prominent and respected figures in German sport. Since the multiple German champion and national table tennis player took over the presidency of the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB) in 1981, he has been involved in sports on a voluntary basis. From 1988 to 1992, Gäb was a member of the presidency of the National Olympic Committee (NOK) and from 1990 to 1991 he was deputy chairman of the board of Deutsche Sporthilfe.
Health problems prevented promotion
Health problems at the time prevented the stronger commitment intended for him in the succession to NOK President Willi Daume. He had to renounce the task entrusted to him in 1992 for the Olympic Games in Barcelona as head of the mission of the first all-German team after reunification because a virus began to destroy his liver. Later he also gave up his offices as president of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) and the DTTB, which he had led for 13 years.
"Athlete for organ donation"
In 1994 Gäb had to undergo a liver transplantation. His personal experience led him to support people in similar situations with the associations he founded, "Sportler für Organspende" (1998) and "Kinderhilfe Organtransplantation" (2004).
On the board of Opel
At the beginning of his professional career, the trained journalist founded the trade magazine "Auto-Zeitung" (1968) and was the first head of communications at Ford (1973-1981) at board level. In 1982, he moved to Adam Opel AG, first as a member of the Board of Management, and finally as Vice-President of General Motors Europe and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Adam Opel AG. After leaving Opel in 1998, he became increasingly involved in sports and returned to the Board of Management of Sporthilfe, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Management from 2005 to 2007. Under the motto "Performance. Fair Play. Miteinander." he developed the strategic brand core of the foundation, which is still valid today. In 2008 he moved to the Supervisory Board as Chairman, of which he is still Honorary Chairman today.
Hans Wilhelm Gäb has been married to Mrs. Hella for 58 years and has two children, Wolfgang and Christiane.

The selection of the winner of the "Golden Sports Pyramid" will be made by the previous award winners and the Sporthilfe Foundation Board as an independent jury. The "Golden Sports Pyramid" has been awarded since the year 2000. Among the prize winners are Steffi Graf, Franz Beckenbauer, Heiner Brand, Henry Maske, Rosi Mittermaier-Neureuther, Uwe Seeler and Max Schmeling as well as last year's prize winner Franziska van Almsick.
