English version

Germans did not fully benefit from falling gas prices last year, giving utilities an extra profit of almost one billion euros. This is the result of a gas price study by the Hamburg research institute EnergyComment, reported by the "Saarbrücker Zeitung".

The Green parliamentary group in the Bundestag had commissioned the survey. According to the study, in 2020 the mild winter and the consequences of Corona initially caused a real slump to a historic low price of 0.58 cents per kilowatt hour in wholesale. In the meantime, the price there is back at 1.44 cents, the already low level of the previous year. Private consumers, however, hardly benefited from this. Their supply prices fell by an average of only 3.5 percent.

For industry, the price level fell by 32.5 per cent

For industrial customers, on the other hand, the price level fell by 32.5 per cent. At the same time, the suppliers' profit margin increased in 2020 from 3.05 cents to 3.35 cents per kilowatt hour. If the lower cost prices had been passed on in full, each private household could have saved 60 euros a year, according to the Hamburg researchers.

Switching suppliers is advisable

About 55 per cent of homes in Germany are heated with gas. More than two-thirds of customers are loyal to their local supplier. The authors of the study pointed out that a price comparison will become even more important in the coming year, as 300 suppliers have already announced price increases due to the upcoming CO2 tax. The energy expert of the Green Party, Oliver Krischer, also said: "Especially the private gas customers in the so-called basic supply tariffs, which are particularly expensive, can only be recommended to switch." pm, ots, mei
