English version

Hygiene expert Professor Klaus-Dieter Zastrow sees regular disinfection of the oral cavity as an effective measure to contain the Corona pandemic. "We disinfect our hands, everyone knows that, everyone accepts that. And now I ask: Why don't we disinfect our mouths, where the virus is located?", Zastrow told the television station phoenix.

If one followed that, he said, one could take back many restrictions. "Then you can open up everything," Zastrow said, adding that in addition to daycare centres and schools, this also applies to retail and gastronomy, theatre and concert halls or cinemas. "We must always remind ourselves where the virus actually comes from. It's in the human oral cavity, it has no other source," says Klaus-Dieter Zastrow, head of the hygiene department at the Potsdam Clinic.

Disinfection lasts two to three days

Disinfecting by gargling lasts for two to three days, he said. "It's like this: The viruses are killed, some virus will remain, which will then multiply again over the next two to three days, but it will not get the viral load it needs to be infectious again and, above all, to fall ill itself. There is also a very high level of self-protection. And if you do this every three days, then nothing can happen, the virus no longer gets a chance," explains Zastrow.

Strict mask requirement is enough to open retail shops

In order to reopen the retail trade, a strict mask requirement is basically enough. "Medical mouth-nose protection is completely sufficient, because the virus can't come from anywhere else and anyone who still hasn't understood that can't be helped any more," says the doctor of hygiene and environmental medicine in an interview with phoenix. pm, ots, mei
