English version

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach does not think much of the plans of the European Football Union (UEFA) to have the European Championship matches in June 2021 played in twelve countries and in front of as many fans as possible, despite the rising number of corona cases.

"That is irresponsible," said Lauterbach in an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung". With a view to more and more quarantine cases also in the German football league, Lauterbach pointed to the increasing risk for professional footballers to fall ill with Long Covid: "These are long-term health damages that can mean the immediate end of one's career. This must be honestly communicated to people whose health is their capital," said Lauterbach.

The spread of the British variant is now increasingly undermining the hygiene concept of the German Football League, which has functioned relatively well for a long time: "One will have to live with the increased number of infections in professional football. The important thing is that the concept must not be weakened under any circumstances," said Lauterbach. Even in the season finale, match cancellations would have to follow cases of corona in the team circle.

No reliable studies on football

"What surprises me is that the German Football League has so far never had a clean experiment carried out to investigate how great the risk of infection really is in a football match," Lauterbach criticised in the NOZ. Other football organisations have not yet conducted any reliable studies either. This makes it difficult to assess the question of when and how football can be allowed as a popular sport again, Lauterbach said. pm, ots, mei
