Im Inforadio vom rbb sagte er, Söder genieße bei den Wählerinnen und Wählern großes Vertrauen: "Wenn man sich Umfragen anschaut und die Reaktionen, die ich heute nach unserem Beschluss bekommen habe, dann stelle ich fest, dass es breites Zutrauen der Menschen in Markus Söder gibt, dieses Land aus der Pandemie zu führen."
Wegner erklärte, die Reputation von CDU-Chef Laschet werde durch das Votum des Berliner Landesverbandes nicht beschädigt:
"Armin Laschet ist ein guter Bundesvorsitzender, der großen Rückhalt in unserer Partei erfährt, der die unterschiedlichen Flügel auch zusammenführt. Aber mir geht es tatsächlich darum, wie kriegen wir es hin, dass Deutschland weiterhin von einer unionsgeführten Bundesregierung angeführt wird. Wie kriegen wir es hin, das größtmögliche Vertrauen der Menschen zu gewinnen?"
Eine Stimmungslage abgefragt
Wegner sagte, die CDU befinde sich jetzt in einem Prozess, in dem die Frage der Kanzlerkandidatur mit der Schwesterpartei CSU besprochen werden müsse. "Wir haben ja heute noch keinen Beschluss gefasst, sondern wir haben eine Stimmungslage abgefragt. Und jetzt müssen wir gucken, wie am Ende des Tages das Ergebnis ist. Entscheidend ist dann für mich, dass wir uns gemeinsam hinter den gemeinsamen Kanzlerkandidaten stellen."
Kanzlerkandidat für das ganze Land entscheidend
Unterdessen will der Fraktionschef der CSU im bayerischen Landtag, Thomas Kreuzer, die Basis mitentscheiden lassen. "Die Entscheidung über den Kanzlerkandidaten ist nicht nur für die Union, sondern für das ganze Land entscheidend. Deshalb muss sie auf eine möglichst breite Basis gestellt werden und es verbietet sich, dass dies in engen Führungszirkeln entschieden wird", so Kreuzer. Berlin CDU leader Kai Wegner has defended his state party's vote for Markus Söder (CSU) as the Union's candidate for chancellor.
