Significant material bottlenecks have occurred in the construction industry. This is according to surveys by the Ifo Institute. "This is an unprecedented bottleneck since 1991. Apparently, this caused at least a temporary impairment in construction activity in April," says Felix Leiss, survey expert at the Ifo Institute.

In building construction, 23.9 per cent of firms reported in April that they had problems procuring building materials in time. In March, the figure was 5.6 per cent. In civil engineering, the shortage also worsened significantly in April, to 11.5 per cent from 2.9 per cent in March. "Materials are in short supply in many places, we hear from the industry. Prices have risen simultaneously due to supply problems in several markets: for example, structural steel, construction timber and plastics - such as insulation materials and foils," says Ludwig Dorffmeister, an expert on the construction industry at the Ifo Institute. It is to be assumed that capacities were reduced because of Corona and that demand then picked up faster than expected. Special factors in production may also have played a role, for example the onset of winter in the USA, which delayed timber production, further processing and transport. pm, ifo, mei
