Die Bundesfamilienministerin, Franziska Giffey, ist wegen einer Plagiatsaffäre um ihre Doktorarbeit von ihrem Amt zurückgetreten.
An ihrer SPD-Spitzenkandidatur bei der Wahl zum Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus im September wolle sie aber festhalten. In der heutigen Sitzung des Bundeskabinetts habe sie ihre Entscheidung mitgeteilt. Anlass seien die Vorwürfe gegen Giffey wegen ihrer Doktorarbeit an der Freien Universität Berlin (FU).

Verfahren im Jahr 2020 wieder neu aufgerollt
Die FU hatte Giffey im.Herbst 2019 nach Plagiatsvorwürfen wegen Mängeln in ihrer Dissertation eine Rüge erteilt. Der Doktortitel wurde ihr aber nicht entzogen. Nach Kritik an dieser Entscheidung wurde das Verfahren gegen die Giffey-Dissertation im vergangenen Jahr wieder neu aufgenommen. Die erneute Überprüfung der Doktorarbeit sei inzwischen beendet und sehe vor, Giffey den Doktorgrad abzuerkennen. Die Ministerin hatte bereits im Vorfeld angekündigt, dass sie von ihrem Amt zurücktreten werde, sollte ihr der Doktortitel aberkannt werden. mei

The German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Franziska Giffey, has resigned from her office because of a plagiarism affair surrounding her doctoral thesis.

Procedure to be reopened in 2020
The FU had reprimanded Giffey in.autumn 2019 following allegations of plagiarism due to flaws in her dissertation. However, her doctorate was not revoked. Following criticism of this decision, the proceedings against Giffey's dissertation were reopened last year. The re-examination of the dissertation had been completed in the meantime and provided for Giffey to be stripped of her doctoral degree.
