Der ehemalige französische Botschafter in Washington, Gérard Araud, hat den Ausstieg Australiens aus dem gemeinsamen U-Boot-Deal als Verrat bezeichnet.
"Für uns ist es ein politischer Schlag auf die schlimmstmögliche Weise: über Nacht, ohne Warnung", sagt Araud im Interview mit der Wochenzeitung "Die Zeit". Die USA und Großbritannien hätten sich gegen Frankreich verschworen.
Neuer Militärpakt "AUKUS"
Australien war in der vergangenen Woche aus einem Vertrag ausgestiegen, der das Land verpflichtet hätte, Frankreich militärische U-Boote abzukaufen. Zudem kündigte die australische Regierung an, dem AUKUS-Pakt beizutreten, einem Militärpakt mit den USA und Großbritannien.

Die kolportierte Summe von 60 Milliarden Euro, die Frankreich dadurch angeblich verloren geht, bezeichnet Gérard Araud als falsch. Die Zahlen, die jetzt vielfach genannt würden, seien "reine Fantasie", so der Diplomat: "Der französische Anteil an dem Vertrag betrug vielleicht acht Milliarden Euro", sagt Araud. Bedeutender seien die geopolitischen Auswirkungen: "In Frankreich wird diese Entscheidung als Killer unserer indo-pazifischen Strategie gesehen." pm, ots

The former French ambassador in Washington, Gérard Araud, has called Australia's withdrawal from the joint submarine deal a betrayal.
"For us, it is a political blow in the worst possible way: overnight, without warning," Araud says in an interview with the weekly German newspaper Die Zeit. The USA and Great Britain had conspired against France.
