CDU-Präsidiumsmitglied Norbert Röttgen fordert nach der Wahlniederlage von Kanzlerkandidat und Parteichef Armin Laschet personelle Konsequenzen und einen Neuanfang. Dieser Prozess müsse stattfinden, egal ob die Union an der Regierung beteiligt sein werde oder in die Opposition gehe, sagte Röttgen in einem Interview mit dem "Tagesspiegel".
"Wenn das klar ist, müssen wir auch über eine personelle Neuaufstellung sprechen." Man müsse jetzt ehrlich das aussprechen, was ohnehin jeder wisse: "Die fehlende Akzeptanz des Kandidaten war der Hauptgesprächsgegenstand im Wahlkampf. Das weiß auch Armin Laschet." Röttgen betonte mit Blick auf den CDU-Vorsitzenden, es reiche aber jetzt nicht, "nur eine Person auszuwechseln".
Umfassender Erneuerungsprozess notwendig
Der Erneuerungsprozess müsse umfassend sein: "Partei, Fraktion, Inhalte, Kommunikation, Personal." Der frühere Bundesumweltminister und heutige Vorsitzende des Auswärtigen Ausschusses hatte Anfang des Jahres gegen Laschet und Friedrich Merz im Rennen um den Parteivorsitz verloren. Röttgen machte deutlich, dass Laschet aus seiner Sicht aber noch die anstehenden Gespräche führen solle: "Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt geht es darum, dass wir gesprächsbereit und gesprächsfähig sein müssen. Das tun wir in der personellen Ausgangslage, die die Partei gewählt hat."
"Wir haben keinen Regierungsauftrag"
Ungeachtet der Versuche von Laschet, mit der FDP und den Grünen über die Bildung einer Jamaika-Koalition zu sondieren, sieht Röttgen kaum Chancen hierfür. "Wir haben keinen Regierungsauftrag. Das Prä der Regierungsbildung liegt bei der SPD als stärkster Kraft."
Keine Zeit für persönliche Ambitionen
Für sich selbst ließ er eine erneute Kandidatur offen, sollte Laschet stürzen. Angesprochen darauf, dass Friedrich Merz bereits wieder bereit für eine Kandidatur zu sein scheint, wenn es eine Mitgliederbefragung oder eine Wahl durch die CDU-Basis gibt, sagte Röttgen dem Tagesspiegel: "Jetzt ist absolut nicht die Zeit für persönliche Ambitionen. Es geht jetzt um die Partei und die Erneuerung der CDU."
Ehrlichen Umgang mit der Niederlage
Er forderte - ohne Laschet zu nennen - einen ehrlicheren Umgang mit der Niederlage. "Zur Ehrlichkeit gehören zwei Dinge: Erstens ist die SPD die stärkste Partei und damit die Wahlgewinnerin. Zweitens haben wir nicht nur das historisch schlechteste Ergebnis, sondern laufen mit nur noch 19 Prozent für die CDU Gefahr, unseren Status als Volkspartei zu verlieren", betonte Röttgen. "Wir haben in fünf Bundesländern nicht ein einziges Direktmandat gewonnen. Wir liegen bei den Erstwählern bei 10 Prozent. "Uns muss klar sein, dass wir die Bürgerinnen und Bürger nicht mit Schlagworten abspeisen können, die keine inhaltliche Idee erkennen lassen. Wir müssen weg von der Schlagwortebene, von "Modernisierung" und "Entfesselung" und "Ökonomie plus Ökologie", hin zu einer konkreten Ebene. Denn die Menschen spüren ja ihre Ängste und Erwartungen ebenfalls konkret", sagte Röttgen. "Dass wir nicht drei, vier gut durchdachte Schwerpunkte angeboten haben, hat die personelle Schwäche durch eine inhaltliche Schwäche ergänzt, anstatt zu versuchen, das eine mit dem anderen auszugleichen."
Laschet hat auf falsches Team gesetzt
Zudem habe Laschet auf das falsche Team gesetzt. "Das ist ein Teil der Tragödie." In seinem Arbeitsgebiet im Auswärtigen Ausschuss arbeiteten hochkompetente CDU-Mitglieder und so sei das in anderen Gebieten auch, betonte Röttgen. No time for personal ambitions
For himself, he left open a renewed candidacy should Laschet fall. Asked about the fact that Friedrich Merz already seems ready to run again if there is a membership poll or an election by the CDU base, Röttgen told the Tagesspiegel: "Now is absolutely not the time for personal ambitions. It's now about the party and the renewal of the CDU."
Dealing honestly with defeat
He called - without naming Laschet - for a more honest approach to defeat. "Honesty includes two things: firstly, the SPD is the strongest party and thus the election winner. Secondly, we not only have the historically worst result, but with only 19 per cent left for the CDU, we are in danger of losing our status as the people's party," Röttgen stressed. "We have not won a single direct mandate in five federal states. We are at 10 per cent among first-time voters. That is the alarming finding and an existential danger for us as a people's party."
No content in the election campaign
He accused Laschet of having had no content in the election campaign. "It must be clear to us that we cannot fob off the citizens with slogans that do not reveal any substantive idea. We have to move away from the slogan level, from 'modernisation' and 'unleashing' and 'economy plus ecology', to a concrete level. After all, people's fears and expectations are also concrete," said Röttgen. "The fact that we didn't offer three or four well-thought-out focal points added a weakness in terms of content to the weakness in terms of personnel, instead of trying to balance one with the other."
Laschet backed the wrong team
