Der Brite machte am Samstag im Sprint-Qualifying sowie tags darauf im Rennen insgesamt sage und schreibe 24 Positionen gut und hält dank dieser unglaublichen Leistung die Formel-1-Weltmeisterschaft weiter offen. Konkurrent und WM-Führender Max Verstappen versuchte zwar mit allen Mitteln (und am Rande des Erlaubten) die Angriffe Hamiltons abzuwehren, musste sich jedoch letztlich geschlagen geben. Für Aufsehen und große Empörung seitens Mercedes sorgte Verstappen nach 48 Runden, als der Red-Bull-Pilot in Kurve vier den Silberpfeil nach außen drängte und beide in die Auslaufzone gerieten.

Die Diskussionen reißen vermutlich bis zum Rennen in Katar nicht ab. Dann wird der Fokus beider Lager jedoch wieder gänzlich auf dem Sportlichen liegen, zumal die Formel 1 das erste Mal auf dem Losail International Circuit gastiert. Hamilton geht aufgrund seiner furiosen Aufholjagd als leichter Favorit in das Nachtrennen und könnte den Rückstand auf den 24-jährigen Niederländer weiter verkürzen.
