Rising Corona numbers have brought more workers back to the home office. In December, 27.9 per cent of employees worked there at times, up from 23.8 per cent in August. At the peak in March, it was 31.7 per cent. This is according to a survey by the Ifo Institute.

The most recent increase was across all sectors. Among service providers, the share rose from 33.4 to 38.2 per cent, in wholesale from 15.8 to 20.8 per cent, in industry from 16.4 to 19.7 per cent, in retail from 5.3 to 6.6 per cent and in construction from 5.0 to 8.5 per cent. "Not all companies seem to be paying attention to the home office obligation that was reintroduced at the end of November," says Jean-Victor Alipour, an expert on home office at the Ifo Institute. "The rate has indeed risen again. However, it is a good 4 percentage points below the peak value of March 2021. Only in television and radio stations and in telecommunications did the rate rise again: there, 63 and 65 per cent of employees, respectively, worked from home for their employer." The Ifo Institute estimates that across all industries, 56 per cent of employees could work at least partly from a home office. pm, ots, mei
