English version

The former President of the Munich Ifo Institute, Hans-Werner Sinn, has called on the European Central Bank (ECB) to change course in monetary policy.

"The fire of inflation must be extinguished immediately, because it will be very difficult to put it out later. The ECB's policy of appeasement is contrary to the Treaty and irresponsible. The Americans and the British started raising interest rates long ago. The ECB should follow suit," Sinn tells the weekly newspaper Die Zeit. The inflation rate had risen to 5.3 per cent in December. This is well above the European Central Bank's target of two per cent. Sinn fears above all that wages and prices will build up each other. The trade unions would "demand last year's inflation in the coming wage rounds. We will get a wage-price spiral". pm, ots, mei
